Today, on International Women’s Day, I honour the memory of my Great Granny Janet Gorrie and her three daughters – my Great Aunts Bel, Mary and Beth – who worked unstintingly in Scotland for women to be given the vote.
Great Granny Janet Gorrie from Perth, Scotland
They were members of the WSPU in Edinburgh and took part in demonstrations, pageants and the census protest in 1911 (a night of civil disobedience and fun!)

Auntie Mary dressed as Scottish heroine, Kate-Bar-Lass, for 1909 pageant and demo in Edinburgh
Bel was acknowledged by one of the WSPU leaders, Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, as their champion newspaper seller in all Scotland!

Don’t miss your chance to experience India in a unique way – visit Kolkata (Calcutta), Darjeeling and Assam in the company of international best-selling author of the India Tea series novels, Janet MacLeod Trotter.
The Beast from the East. Storm Emma. Met Office red warnings. They certainly aren’t our idea of adventure. Wouldn’t you rather be surrounded by sprawling tea plantations than frozen winds? Prefer to be wrapped up in memories of the bygone Raj than scarves and gloves? Surely you’d rather slip into an exotic spice market than down another icy path? If this sounds like your idea of adventure too, then hurry! We’ve only a few more spaces left on our group journey through North-East India – and the Raj – this November…
This exceptional small group tour explores East India differently – through the lens of historical novels set in the British Raj. Combine this with the sights and sounds of present day Calcutta, wildlife safaris in Assam, visiting tea plantations, and the extraordinary colourful local life. At each location, Janet MacLeod Trotter will deliver a book reading session from her best-selling ‘India Tea series’ novels, a rare opportunity to bring to life these evocative places.
How many opportunities are there to travel through India with a best-selling author? To find out more, view the virtual itinerary using the link below – but trust us, it’s much better in person.
